Isuzu – Wadi Khasab Weekend Experience
As the summer approaches and the temperature rises it is best to enjoy the outdoors at high altitude or at sea. A weekend experience in Wadi Khasab for some mountain hiking and scuba diving in Khor Najed seemed the perfect weekend escape. And to top it off this time I was going to enjoy the ride behind the wheels of the all new Isuzu

The All New Isuzu D-Max has been crafted after nearly 50 years of refinement and pioneering development. Boasting of almost a century of truck-manufacturing DNA, the All New Isuzu D-Max redefines the toughness and is an amalgamation of splendid design, excellent performance, immense safety and resilience.
I called up the team and made sure everyone was up for adventure. Friday was a date. I received the car from Isuzu on Thursday night and loaded the gear for the weekend. Its important to always load the largest items first, the heaviest on the bottom and distribute the weight. More importantly never leave anything loose. One of the advantages of the Isuzu is the big and well-designed bed space. The car was spacious from the front and the back seat was wide. The interior delivered more than just space and comfort as you can find all the technology and modern conveniences you have come to expect in a new car at your fingertips. And the performance even better, ushering in a new era for pick-up trucks the Isuzu D-Max consists of a new 2.5 L diesel engine with common-rail engine designed with superior know-how that has seen over 23 million Isuzu diesel engines sold worldwide, achieves 109HP / 280Nm. That’s 109HP/280Nm and current 3.0L diesel engine (136HP)/294Nm flat torque performance, lots of acceleration at highway speed and off road performance, all backed with ISUZU’s famed reliability. This inventive engine has accomplished class leading fuel efficiency, power, torque and environmental friendliness all simultaneously.
We met with Joy and Nader on Friday morning and headed straight to the Darah borders in Ras Al Khaimah. Our visitors were lucky to have cold breeze on a sunny day. First, I got to test the Isuzu on the paved roads then it was time to climb up the bumpy road leading to the picturesque view of Khor Najd bay. When we arrived at the top of the hill, Khor Najd was laying in the heart of the bay with all its glory. Pictures, fun and laughter and time passed. It was then time to head to what we had planned to be our camping site.
On my way to the plateau my excitement and the amazing clouds that were hovering at the summit of the mountains encouraged me to take a small detour and lead the group to the summit of Stairway to Heaven as we arrived, fog was speeding down to cut our way, but we managed to take some brilliant shots.
To reach the camping spot, we had to climb a bit further and cross the village of Sey quietly sleeping amid green pastures. The contrast between this little paradise and the surrounding savage rocky mountains was overwhelming to us all. It was a long drive up to the summit on a rocky road, steep cliffs and narrow corners that can only be accessible by a 4×4. Increasing vehicle speed until it ‘planes’ over the corrugations con reduce vibration significantly, but the planing speed may be too high for the driving conditions. Depending on the corrugations, planing speed is around 60-80 km/h. Lowering tire pressures reduces vibration as the tire sidewalls act as shock absorbers. However this causes the tire to heat up and can lower tire life or even cause tire failure. It is sometimes better to sacrifice tire life and lower tire pressure to reduce the damage being caused to the vehicle, as well as the comfort of the vehicle’s occupants. Yet even though the D-Max was fully loaded with diving and camping gear, I was able to drive offroad as comfortable and smooth as if I was driving on road. The fresh truck-tough chassis means an even better balance and performance whether loaded or not, delivering superior stability and road holding regardless of the conditions. Combining a larger and stronger rear tray with a 4×4 electronic shift on-the-fly, there’s not much it cannot handle. A new aggressive form exterior design with a perfect proportion seen in the all new D-MAX does not only end in design, but also accomplishes outstanding aerodynamics. This really helped reaching our destination with ease and joy. We arrived to our destination just before sunset and we started preparing the barbecue for some very hungry mouths and our guest Joy and Nader. Then playing began. Not the regular playing but getting creative with pictures and videos. Hisham and Saeed were trying different techniques and the shots we took were pretty awesome and artistic.
At around 11pm Mario called so Ahmed and I rushed down to the city to find him, a perfect opportunity to test-drive the D Max performance at night. I must say I had never felt more comfortable driving a 4×4 pickup at night until I experienced the D Max. Visibility was really good and the projecting light from the headlight was wide giving a wider angle and a deeper distance. This was really helpful as I was driving down rocky road and narrow corners, a dangerous thing to do at night. In the D Max I felt safe.
The morning was calm and energetic as well. After breakfast, we were all ready for some hiking. One hour and we reached the plateau I was looking for. Another photo session was a must with the company I was with: Ahmed, Hicham and Saeed were a treasure to learn from in photography specially with our latest big boy toy, the new DJI Phantom, hovering around above us as we explore the area. From the plateau, we could see Ras Al Khaimah and two tiny villages nesting by the shoulders of the cliff.
Heading back down after an energetic outing, we decided to linger by the sea of Khasab, enjoying the warm rays of sun as it buries itself in the waves. We stayed for a couple of hours, listening to music, collecting seashells and rocks and just chilling under the suspicious eyes of the seagulls and ducks disturbing by us welcomed visitors invading their calm hideout.
